Surfline has an article here. I had the chance to try out my new Hydrofoil fin. I caught 2 really good waves. The last was a solid 6' left that seemed to go forever!

The fin held the line OK yet it seemed to slow me down a bit. On my last wave as an exit maneuver I went for a roundhouse cutback. The fin dragged, I stalled and then I got nailed by the wave. Still it was an awesome session! Can't wait for the next chance to test it out.

Aloha!

I just completed this piece. It was designed and developed over 20 years by Gold Coast surfer, shaper and designer John Harris. I wonder how it will work with the side H3 fins as they have such a wide cant.

We shall see. Admittedly a lot of what we learned was over my head and I didn't see any practical application for much of it.

Currently working on my Tree series I stumbled across the idea to use random placement and color engines in order to arrive at layouts. These are the result of some of my studies. I plan on combining engines to create one that will allow for randomness in both placement and color at the same time.

The piece on the left uses a random placement engine in which a Flash component effects selected movieclips. The middle and right hand pieces simply use a random color generator.

Tree Studies

So I created a few Tree Studies the last couple of days. I'm not sure if they work but I needed to see them to know where I might go. It's hard because I've basically created an open ended format. A tree on top of any background. I could go on forever and probably will. The thing is that 1 out of 5,000. just might work.

We shall see.

Heavy State shirts

I designed these this summer. I haven't produced them yet but plan to. I also want to explore screenprinting on laminate material and using them for surfboard art.

I came up with Heavy State Industries when I was living in Hawaii in 2002. Surfers describe waves as being heavy and in Hawaii they use the word to describe a lot of things. I decided that Hawaii was the "Heavy State" and went from there. I came up with the logo, we had it Trademarked and here we are. Let's see where I go with it. It may end up just something on paper. Either way I have fun designing shirts.

Current painting

Painting Process

So the process is a bit involved. After about 4 months we are only 2/3rds complete. Much of this is a simple matter of life getting in the way and another part of it is we are just taking a long time to get it done! Either way this is an ambitous first project and we are eager to have it comepleted!

We started off by desiging the painting. Once completed we decided on the dimensions: 36"X55" or 3x5.5 feet with the piece executed in three panels. Each panel is made up of 1"x2" frames with 1/16" board mounted on top. Canvas was then stretched over it. We then primed the canvas and painted each panel with house paint.

Each pattern was then printed to scale. Then we mounted the prints on frosted mylar and cut each pattern out to create our stencils. The stencils were then spray mounted on the panels and we painted them in. After removing the stencils we tightened up the edges.

We have just completed the edges and are now set to burn the silkscreens for the dandleion and the dandelion parts.

Dandelion Painting - Final Design

Gabrielle and I spent 2 months designing this. Either way I need to surf and have put together a small quiver. I grab the right one based on what Mother Nature is dishing out.

My Current Quiver Includes:

- Retro Fish: 5'8" shaped by Phil Becker from Hermosa Beach, CA

- Sashimi: 5'10" shaped by Al Merrick / Channel Islands. Gabrielle bought for me on our first trip together. We stayed in Costa Rica for 10 days and drove down most of the Pacific coast!

- Flyer: 6'0" shaped by Al Merrick / Channel Islands. I bought when we were down in Puerto Rico a couple of years ago.

The Green Machine!

This has been a project this summer. I've been restoring the engine compartment as much as I can. I've put in about 5k so far. I've had the carb rebuilt, rebuilt the transmission, new starter, new alternator, new regulator, had a thorough tune up done and am now having a new timing chain put in. More to come as time and money allow.

My First Post!

yaaaay!
